Priority 3 – Application and Use of Lucas-3
Indications
There is a requirement to perform external cardiac compressions during the management of cardiac arrest.
LUCAS must only be used by paramedics/EMT2 who have undergone training by the Trust.
Contraindications
If it is not possible to position the LUCAS device safely or correctly on the patient’s chest.
Too small patient: if the LUCAS device alerts with 3 fast signals when lowering the Suction Cup and you cannot enter the PAUSE mode or ACTIVE mode.
Most pre-pubescent children will be too small for LUCAS, therefore it should not be routinely used in this patient group.
Too large patient: If you cannot lock the Upper Part of the LUCAS device to the Back Plate without compressing the patient’s chest.
Skill Competency Training Record
In order for the Lucas device to be utilised, the Lucas training package should be completed and assessed by a competent trainer/assessor.
On completion the competency record should be completed and sent to mandatory.training@nwas.nhs.uk.
All elements must be achieved to be deemed competent.
